Parental Concerns on Managing Academic Problem in Children

The Modern School, ECNCR organised a session on ‘Parental concerns on managing academic problem in children’ on November 26, 2021 for parents and teachers. The aim of the session was to alleviate the concerns of parents as well as help them to manage academic problems in children especially in this era of online learning.

It was a Question-and-Answer session wherein, Dr. V.S. Ravindran, Director General, ICTRC answered numerous queries of parents regarding children’s aggressive behaviour, self-study, improvement in academics, and many more.

The Principal, Ms. Abha Sadana welcomed the speaker as well as other distinguished guests, Mr. Mathew K G, Principal, Excel Public School, Mysore and Professor Keshav Singh, ICTRC.

Dr. Ravindran categorized children as per their concentration level and explained the ways to deal accordingly. He advised parents to understand various signs of stress, normal or alarming, and guided them to talk to their child constantly and let there be no ‘do or die situation’ but retrying and redoing scenarios.

Answering a query related to spelling mistakes, he cautioned the parent not to jump to hasty conclusions as it might be due to blending and segmenting problems or just a case of sluggish handwriting. He further reiterated that parents must be aware of learning disabilities and sort the help of a counselor regarding the same. Aggressive nature might reduce the retention capacity of the child hence will genuinely affect his learning capacity and academics altogether. Parents must seek reconciliation after a confrontation with the child as soon as possible in order to help him/her concentrate on his/her studies.

Parents were advised to induce interest in studies through hope and positive talks providing a permanent study place to their children and encouraging their wards to practice a few physical exercises.

To enhance the brain’s capacity to retain the taught concept for a longer duration, students must revise the taught concept within twenty- four hours. He asked parents to keep a check on the regular revision of concepts by their wards.

According to him, the habit to study for long hours can be best induced during the early years. An average self-study period of one and a half hour is enough for the child on a daily basis to score better marks.

Dr. Ravindran further advised parents to differentiate between habits and addictions.

It was an invigorating session and the solutions provided by the renowned speaker and counselor helped in alleviating the anxiety of parents regarding their wards’ behavior as well as academic performance
