Workshop for Gender Equality as Smart Development at Barakhamba School

Modern School, Barakhamba Road, had the privilege of hosting an outreach programme on the theme “Gender Equality as Smart Development – Investing in Women for Inclusive Growth” on 25 September 2025. The keynote speaker for the event was *Ms. Mandakini Kaul, Regional Coordinator for South Asia Regional Integration and Engagement at the **World Bank*.

In her compelling address, Ms. Kaul provided an in-depth analysis of gender inequality and its impact on inclusive development. Drawing on a wealth of data and global research, she illustrated how systemic barriers prevent women from fully participating in the workforce—such as limited mobility, unsupportive workplace environments, early marriage, childcare responsibilities, and unequal pay. These challenges, she noted, not only restrict women's opportunities but also hinder broader economic and social progress by leaving a vast pool of human potential untapped.

Through real-life case studies from Assam, Bangladesh, and other regions, Ms. Kaul brought the issue to life, blending statistical insight with powerful narratives from her own professional experience. The session encouraged students to engage deeply with the topic and reflect on their roles as future changemakers.

A dynamic *Q&A session* followed, during which Ms. Kaul emphasized that while legal and economic reforms are vital, lasting change requires a fundamental shift in societal attitudes toward gender roles and equality.

The event concluded with remarks by *Ms. Ambika Pant*Member of the Board of Trustees, who shared her reflections on the session and extended sincere thanks to Ms. Kaul for her inspiring and thought-provoking presentation.

The programme was a highly enriching experience for students, fostering awareness of gender-based issues, encouraging critical thought, and motivating young minds to work toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
