Workshop on Special Education

"Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way." - John Evans
To ensure that every student 's individuality and creativity is recognized, it is imperative that teachers are  able to recognize the learning disorders faced by their students.

Mr. Zeno Van der Zalm, a Special Educator and Information Technology expert from Netherlands conducted a workshop on August 13, 2023 highlighting the role of special education.

The workshop intended to provide a basic understanding of specific learning disabilities i.e. Autism, ADHD, SLD and Dyslexia.

He focused mainly on how to diagnose an autistic child; Autism as a condition and how to help the child to learn. He explained in detail about the working of the brain in this condition   and how an autistic child receives and perceives information differently than a normal child. It was emphasized that the use of technology and instruments can prove to be useful for a child who struggles to finish written work.

Visual aids and graphics can be incorporated while teaching a lesson, so that it is easy for the child to grasp as autistic children shirk from verbal communication. Repetition of instructions, lessons and a fixed routine help autistic students to learn better.

He demonstrated an innovative ChatBox developed by him that uses AI to help students with SLD and ASD and facilitates autistic children. The workshop was enriching as it gave an insight to the educators regarding diagnosing learning disabilities and how to be instrumental in helping the students.
